This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about how a Group Study Exchange
can make history.

For the first time in southern African history, a group study exchange has taken place
between two formerly conflicting countries. In November 2006 a GSE team from
Zambia visited South Africa, signifying improved relations between the two countries.
This exchange was made possible from a contribution of district designated funds from
District 9210 to District 9300. With the end of Apartheid in South Africa, these young
professionals are now able to talk to one another and share ideas and common interests
that will help their countries look to the future in peace. Some of the greatest stories
being told today started with a contribution to The Rotary Foundation. Let’s make sure
our club is part of the Rotary story.

  • Billy Brumfield House. The Rotary Club of North Jackson
    is serving supper once a month at The Billy Brumfield House,
    a Stewpot Community Services ministry. Our club serves on
    the 1st  Tuesday of each month. Interested members need to
    meet @ Baker Donelson located at the corner of Eastover
    Drive and the I-55 North Frontage Road @ 5:15 PM and
    then travel together to Billy Brumfield. Also, if you are in-
    terested in sponsoring a month, the est. cost is $180 for
    the food. Mike Dawkins is project chair and can be reach-

  • Between the Lions. Please remember to sign up for Be-
    tween the Lions . During the school year, we read weekly
    to pre-Kindergarteners at William Walton Elementary School
    on Bailey Ave. It is a wonderful experience! The children
    are truly information sponges and very willing learners.

    year begins.

Deeply wounded world needs Rotary Peace Centers

After months of anticipation, I finally arrived in Brisbane, Australia, where I will be for the next 18 months while I pursue the Masters of Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Queensland Rotary Peace Center.

I quickly felt at home after being picked up by our “Australian parents,” who have been extremely helpful in our transition.  I have enjoyed the pros and cons of Australian living as I have quickly adapted to 30 degree weather in March and travelling via a ferry that feels more like vacation than public transit. I have also survived Cyclone Debbie (experiencing my first ever rain day) and have been sure to watch my step for snakes and spiders.  I have also learned to stay out of the Brisbane River.  Bull Sharks are everywhere!!

The staff at the University of Queensland Peace Center have been incredibly welcoming and helpful. I was rather anxious returning to studying after six years, but after only one month I feel inspired and prepared to undertake my program. I’m both honored and intimidated to be on this journey with nine amazing Peace Fellows from all over the globe. Each Peace Fellow brings vast knowledge and life experience.

This semester I’m enrolled in four peace and conflict related courses. The course work is both challenging and exciting. I’m excited to learn not only about peace and conflict theories but also practical skills including mediation. Furthermore, I was excited to be a part of a seminar for Class 14 this past week. These peace fellows presented on their AFE (applied field experience).  It was an enlightening experience and I am excited for my opportunity to apply some of my newfound knowledge into the field.

In a world deeply wounded by conflict, I feel more than ever that peace education is essential. I’m thankful for my sponsoring Rotary Club of Tavistock, Ontario, Canada, and my host Rotary Club of Balmoral Brisbane, Australia, for their continued support, and look forward to keeping in touch!

About the author: Marie-Paule  is a survivor of the Rwandan genocide. She immigrated to Canada 16 years ago. Over the last ten years she has worked with marginalized populations in various community initiatives in Ontario, Canada. Her career goal is to contribute to recovery and mental health in the aftermath of armed conflict, and in the long term, to promote peace and equality through global policymaking.

Rotary Club of North Jackson Holds Club Assembly
The Rotary Club of North Jackson held its annual Club Assembly meeting at St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral Tuesday, May 9, 2017. Approximately 50 club members enjoyed each others companionship and a great meal prepared by the church's award winning Holy Smokers. Thanks to the Holy Smokers for the great event. The tenderloin and vegetables were outstanding! The accompanying photos are from the event.
North Jackson Rotarian Joe Harris Reflects on Terror in the Night

North Jackson Rotarian Joe Harris reflected on Terror in the Night,  a discussion of the activities involving the KKK and the Mississippi Jewish Community in the Civil Rights Era of the 1960s and 1970s at the May 9, 2017 meeting of the Rotary Club of NorthJackson. He began the reflection with a discussion of the killing of 3 Civil Rights workers Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman, and James Chaney in Neshoba County, MS in 1964. Schwerner and Goodman were Jewish. Following the disappearance of these young men, the Jackson Jewish community mobilized to find them. B'nai B'rith, at the time an international Jewish men's organization (It now has female members.) raised funds to assist the FBI in locating the men's bodies. Following the discovery of the bodies, the Jackson Jewish temple (Temple Beth Israel) was bombed as was the home of the rabbi. The Jewish men assisted with deterring Byron de la Beckwith, Jr. who was decades later convicted of killing Medgar Evers, a Jackson Civil Rights worker, from bombing a New Orleans business man. 
 
Mr. Harris also discussed the shoot-out in Meridian in which Kathy Ainsworth, a Jackson 5th grade teacher, was killed in a hail of police bullets, waiting in a car while her fellow member of the Ku Klux Klan named Tommy Tarrants, attempted to bomb the home of a prominent Jewish citizen of Meridian, Miss. Mr. Harris gave credit to the Meridian Police Chief, Roy Gunn, for preventing the bombing and for capturing Tarrants. Mr. Harris is shown at the podium  in the accompanying photo during his presentation. To his right is Mike Dawkins who introduced him and assisted in the preparation of the Power Point presentation that was part of Mr. Harris' presentation.
 
We thank Mr. Harris for his long service to our club and for his courageous work in the Civil Rights Era.
Millsaps' Visiting Professor Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Professor Jason Carl Rosenberg spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at the club's May 2, 2017 meeting. Professor Rosenberg received his Ph. D. from the University of California San Diego. Having worked in Switzerland and Singapore for several years, Dr. Rosenberg is active in several contemporary music scenes and seeks to link these communities. In his talk, Dr. Rosenberg discussed his approach to Experimental Existential music and played some of his compositions.  Dr. Rosenberg is currently a Visiting Professor of music at Millsaps College.
