Prayer. O God, we acknowledge that even
as you inhabit the heavens with power and

Weekly Thought. This week’s Rotary
Foundation Thought is about PolioPlus.
 
In 1985, Rotarians made a promise to the
children of the world to eradicate polio.
Since PolioPlus began, the number of polio
cases worldwide has declined by 99 percent,
thanks largely to the efforts of Rotarians
around the world.  Rotarians have committed
nearly US$650 million toward global polio
eradication efforts. Already, five million child-
ren are walking who would have been paralyzed,
and more than 1.5 million lives have been saved.
None of this would be possible if it weren’t for Ro-
tary’s leadership and vision. 
 
What a wonderful legacy we are leaving to the
children of the world. Goodbye Polio. Thank you,
Rotary.
 
Membership Announcement.  
 
Dennis Hardy is proposed for membership
in the Rotary Club of North Jackson by
Suman Das and is sponsored by past pres-
ident Tom Parry. His Rotary name will be
Dennis. Dennis is a Project Director for
EQHealth Solutions. He and his wife,
Debbie, live in Byram. Dennis is the fath-
er of five adult children. He is a graduate 
of the Air University and of Southern Illinois
University.  Dennis is a member of the 
Board of Directors of the Madison Center
Players community theater. His classifica-
tion would be Healthcare Consultant.  
This is the second publication of Dennis'
membership announcement.
  
Meeting Relocation. The relocation to the
Manship Wood Fired Kitchen location on
Poplar St. in Belhaven has been delayed
until mid-January due to project delays.
The studs are in place awaiting the instal-
lation of drywall. Please be on the lookout
for further announcements as to the date
and the address on Poplar St. 
  • Billy Brumfield House. The Rotary Club of North Jackson
    is serving supper once a month at The Billy Brumfield House,
    a Stewpot Community Services ministry. Our club serves on
    the 1st  Tuesday of each month. Interested members need to
    meet @ Baker Donelson located at the corner of Eastover
    Drive and the I-55 North Frontage Road @ 5:15 PM and
    then travel together to Billy Brumfield. Also, if you are in-
    terested in sponsoring a month, the est. cost is $180 for
    the food. Mike Dawkins is project chair and can be reach-

  • Between the Lions. Please remember to sign up for Be-
    tween the Lions . We read weekly to pre-Kindergarteners
    at William Walton Elementary School on Bailey Ave. It is
    a wonderful experience! The children are truly information
    sponges and very willing learners. Contact Jenny Price

    reading when the children return to school on January 9.

New Year’s resolution: Stand up
and be an ambassador for Rotary

It’s a new year, and here’s something you can resolve to do for your club and for Rotary in 2017.
Think about the last time someone gave you a “word-of-mouth referral” that influenced your decision to do something. Maybe a friend shared a new favorite restaurant over Facebook, or your neighbour recommended a plumber. Or maybe it was that friendly suggestion to come along to a Rotary club meeting that got you involved in Rotary in the first place. Regardless, you probably acted on the referral, in part, because it came from someone you trust!
If you’re passionate about Rotary like I am, I encourage you this year to become an ambassador for your own club — and more importantly for Rotary — by using your “word-of-mouth refNNew erral” power. Here are a few things you can do:
  1. Be Active online and offline. Being active online means posting, commenting, and sharing positive Rotary stories via social media. It’s that simple. Being active offline means you’ll need to be able to have meaningful and interesting conversations about Rotary and who we are and what we do to anyone and everyone.
  2. Wear the Rotary Brand. Wear the Rotary logo on your hat, wear your club shirt or Rotary lapel pin out in public, or change your Facebook profile picture to the Rotary logo for a week. You never know who you will run into or who will see it and the conversations that may be sparked by seeing you wearing some great Rotary apparel.
  3. Tweet. Share with your Twitter followers information about your clubs upcoming events, retweet Rotary International, and tweet about your own personal involvement with Rotary.
  4. Invite a Friend. Next time you are planning to volunteer at one of your club service projects or attend your club meeting, invite a friend along and/or alternatively invite them to like your Rotary club Facebook page.
  5. Share on Facebook. Go beyond just liking your Rotary Club’s or the Rotary International Facebook page and share posts from these pages.  Sharing a Facebook post from your clubs or other Rotary page’s will enable your friends to learn about Rotary and what Rotary is doing in the community.
  6. Tell People. Tell your family, your work colleagues, your Facebook friends, or anyone you meet, about your involvement with Rotary. Talk about your recent involvement with a club service project. Perhaps they never knew of your involvement and were always interested in learning more about Rotary.

Rotarians Present Vocational Talks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

North Jackson Rotarians, Dot Anderson and Lori Greer presented discussions of their respective vocations at the January 3, 2017 meeting of the Rotary Club of North Jackson. Ms. Anderson discussed mental health, particularly juvenile mental health and Ms. Greer discussed the work of the the Medical Mall Foundation especially the work that the Foundation has done to secure the the Medical Mall and to build homes in the foundation's area of interest, which surrounds the mall. The homes which will be rent to own ones are in the area just east of the mall where they replace badly dilapidated dwellings. 
 
Ms. Anderson and Ms. Greer are shown in the accompanying photos. We thank them for their presentations, for being Rotarians, and for what they do for our state.
 
 
 
 
Representative Mark Baker Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Representative Mark Baker from Rankin County spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at its December 27, 2016 meeting. Rep. Baker represents House District 74 in Rankin County. He is Chairman of the Judiciary A Committee. The subject of his talk was the upcoming 2017 legislative session.  He said that in addition to the normal budgetary issues, key subjects will be Education and campaign spending reform  he also discussed State support for a state funded district in the City of Jackson to help fund the City infrastructure and services that the State uses, which he says that the Rankin County delegation unanimously supports and he suspects the Madison County delegation also strongly supports. Representative Baker is shown in the accompanying photo with Club member Virginia Carlton who was first elected to the House of Representatives at the same time as Representative Baker in 2001 and who introduced him at the meeting. We thank Representative Baker for his presentation and for his service to the citizens of Mississippi.
Rotary Club of North Jackson Holiday Party
The Rotary Club of North Jackson held its annual Holiday Party at the beautiful Ridgeland home of club member Seymour Pooley and his wife Maggie. We sincerely thank them for their hospitality and wish them the happiest of holidays. The event was superbly catered by the Manship Wood Fired Kitchen. Our special thanks to Steven O'Neill for a job well done! Music was provided by David Womack. Thank you, David. Again, well done!
Dr. Ken Cleveland Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Dr. Ken Cleveland, a board certified Bariatric Surgeon spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at its December 13, 2016 meeting. The subject of Dr. Cleveland's talk was hormone replacement therapy in both women and men. The underlying facts supporting his talk are that people's bodies produce less estrogen and testosterone as they age. He has adopted his practice to provide replacement hormones to offset that reduced hormone production. The primary method that Dr. Cleveland uses is to insert small tablets in the upper buttocks of patients. He said that the results are available very short term and last for several months.
