In September, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari immunized children against polio in his hometown, Daura in Katsina State. In his first months as Nigeria’s leader, Buhari has shown strong support for polio eradication efforts. On 24 July, the country celebrated one year since its last case of polio caused by the wild poliovirus. To mark the milestone, President Buhari publicly immunized his granddaughter against the disease.
Later this month, the World Health Organization could remove Nigeria from the list of polio-endemic countries, leaving only Pakistan and Afghanistan on the list.

Billy Brumfield House. The Rotary Club of North Jackson is serving supper once a month at The Billy Brumfield House, a Stewpot Community Services ministry. Our club serves on the 1st Tuesday of each month. Interested members need to meet @ Baker Donelson located at the corner of Meadowbrook and the I-55 North Frontage Road @5:15 and then travel together to Billy Brumfield. This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about the impact of a Group Study Exchange (GSE)
Group Study Exchange. For Stephen Rajamani, an insurance broker in Tamilnadu Provice, India the GSE experience was life-changing. Rajamani initially traveled to Brazil to learn about the culture and lifestyle and to learn about insurance practices there. His team visited many businesses, educational institutions and government offices. What Rajamani realized is that human beings are alike every where throughout the world, from the mayors and dignitaries who extended a warm welcome to the host families who showered the team members with affection. Upon returning home, Rajamani became a member of the Rotary Club of Manapparai and showed his gratitude to The Rotary Foundation by becoming a Paul Harris Fellow in his first year. Mike Dawkins Honors His Father with Paul Harris Fellowship
Rotarian and past president Mike Dawkins honored his Father Tom Dawkins with a Paul Harris Fellowship at the Rotary Club of North Jackson's September 1, 2015 meeting. This marked the third Paul Harris Fellowship that Mike has sponsored. The ceremony was introduced by Club member and Appeals Court Justice Virginia Carlton who gave the history of Rotary, of Rotary's founder Paul Harris, and of the Paul Harris Fellowships. The accompanying photo shows Mike Dawkins on the left, Tom Dawkins (center) and Virginia Carlton (right) with Mr. Dawkins' award certificate.
We thank Mike for honoring his father in this way and for supporting Rotary's work. Thanks to Tom for being such a great father to Mike.
James Keeton M. D. Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson
Dr. James Keeton, Vice Chancellor Emeritus of the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at its September 1, 2015 meeting. Dr. Keeton, who retired from his full time position at UMMC in July 2015 continues to work half time on special projects for his successor Dr. LouAnn Woodward. Dr. Keeton is a trained pediatric urologist who led UMMC for 6 years. He discussed the financial impact of UMMC on our State and ongoing work to further improve medical care in Mississippi. UMMC consists of six schools , Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Graduate Studies, Pharmacy, and Health Related professions plus Graduate Medical Educations (Medical Residency). UMMC restricts admissions to its schools to citizens of Mississippi and has a total of 3001 student. The budget is $1.6 billion of which 11.3 % (180 Million is provided by state appropriation. In addition to education , UMMC conducts nearly $100 million in sponsored research aimed at solving Mississippi's acute problems . Key areas are Cancer, Obesity, MIND (Alzheimer's adn dementia), Women's Health and Health Disparities.
UMMC's economic impact in MS is $2.5 billion annually. It generates 20,000 jobs and is the largest employer of Mississippi citizens. It has nearly 30,000 hospital admissions annually and 117 thousand ER visits, 428 thousand hospital outpatient visits and 544 thousand clinic visits. It is clearly a major provider of medical services and a major economic driver of the state, Jackson in particular. It represents 10% of the Jackson Metro Area's economy. It operates four hospitals and a rehabilitation center plus it owns/leases two community hospitals. Dr. Keeton discussed collaborations that UMMC has with medical powerhouses, The Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins University. UMMC is assisting Mayo with telemedicine where UMMC has a leading role. A new medical school is currently under construction. It is scheduled to be completed in 2017.
