Prayer. We thank you, 0 God, for your protective providence enabling us to gather here once again. We
have come as separate individuals with personal histories and current personal involvements. But inherent in each of us also is the desire and ability to engage in fellowship with others, both for personal pleasure and for our purpose of serving others.

We express our thanks for food prepared for us today, and for friendship deepened and fellowship enjoyed in the course of this meeting. Then, as we depart to our remaining tasks today, go with us in

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about
how our club can support the Rotary Peace and 
Conflict Studies Program.

The Rotary Peace and Conflict Studies Program – a pro-
fessional development program that is strengthening the
leaders of today for peace.  Beyond supporting the pro-
gram financially, clubs and districts can actively recruit
qualified applicants for each bi-annual program session. 
Each district can submit as many candidates for each pro-
gram session as they deem qualified. As one alumnus
recently put it, “The program has been nothing short of
fantastic.  I couldn’t ask for more.” Please recall that our
club nominated and supported Bul Mabil as a program
participant about 5 years ago.
  • Billy Brumfield House. The Rotary Club of North Jackson
    is serving supper once a month at The Billy Brumfield House,
    a Stewpot Community Services ministry. Our club serves on
    the 1st  Tuesday of each month. Interested members need to
    meet @ Baker Donelson located at the corner of Eastover
    Drive and the I-55 North Frontage Road @ 5:15 PM and
    then travel together to Billy Brumfield. Also, if you are in-
    terested in sponsoring a month, the est. cost is $180 for
    the food. Mike Dawkins is project chair and can be reach-
    ed @ 601-351-2428 or mdawkins@bakerdonelson.com.
  • Between the Lions. Please remember to sign up for Be-
    tween the Lions. During the school year, we read weekly
    to pre-Kindergarteners at William Walton Elementary School
    on Bailey Ave. It is a wonderful experience! The children
    are truly information sponges and very willing learners.

Membership and New Club
Development Month

While membership development is the responsibility of all Rotary members all year long, August has been designated as a month to celebrate Rotary’s greatest asset — you.
    
Don’t miss out on the many valuable resources that are available for prospective and current members. Using these tools allows clubs to improve their members’ experience so that more prospective members join and more current members stay.

Watch this video of President Ian Riseley speaking about the importance of membership flexibility. Also, clubs can use the Discover Rotary presentation and the prospective member brochure to introduce Rotary to prospects. Clubs that want to promote their unique experience, including events and projects, can customize a club brochure available at the Brand Center. They can edit the content and upload their own photos. 

Rotary Basics is a guide to all things Rotary, from how Rotary began to how you can optimize your member experience. It’s now part of the New Member Welcome Kit, and is also sold separately on Shop. The revised Connect for Goodguide suggests ways members can get involved in Rotary to make an impact in their community and globally. If you need ideas for giving new members a meaningful experience, look to Introducing New Members to Rotary: An Orientation Guide. These resources are available for free download and are sold on shop.rotary.org. 

If you want your club to remain relevant to its members and community, consider taking the Rotary Club Health Check. This exercise helps club leaders discover opportunities for growth. For other ways to evaluate your club, download the Membership Assessment Tools publication. Another guide, Strengthening Your Membership, helps club leaders create a membership development plan. 

Also, our Membership page features an array of resources to suit every need, whether you’re working with clubs and districts in your region to attract potential members, or exchanging tips on engagement.

University of Mississippi Athletic Director Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Ross Bjork, The University of Mississippi Athletic Director, spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson during it Tuesday August 8th meeting. Bjork discussed the vision, budget and current events at Ole Miss athletics. The first photo shows Mr. Bjork during his talk. Also shown fin the second photo from left are, Anna Powers, club vice president; Bjork, Keith Carter, Executive Director of the Athletic Foundation and Matt Monsour, club program chair. We thank Mr. Bjork for his presentation and for his contributions to the University of Mississippi. The Rotary Club of North Jackson meets at noon on Tuesdays at The Rick House, a  part of The Manship Wood Fired Kitchen. The Rick House is located at 715 Poplar Blvd. in the Belhaven Neighborhood of Jackson.
Rotary Club of North Jackson Recognizes Two More Paul Harris

The Rotary Club of North Jackson welcomed two new Paul Harris Fellows to the club during it’s Tuesday August 8th meeting. Members Uriel Pineda and Matthew Turnage became Paul Harris Fellows by contributing $1,000.00 to the Rotary International Foundation. Renee Cotton of Hinds Community College Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Ms. Renee Cotton, District Director of Public & Community Relations for Hinds Community College spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson about the college's 100th anniversary at the club's august 1, 2017 meeting. Ms Cotton is a Clinton native and a graduate of Hinds. She describe how college has grown from an agricultural and home economics institution founded September 17, 1917 on a 45 acre campus in Raymond, MS. to a six campus multi-disciplinary college on 1100 acres in three Mississippi counties, Hinds, Warren, & Rankin. Currently 80% of the graduates go on to 4 year universities to complete their educations. The college offers both academic and vocational technical tracks. Key components of the vocational tracks are truck driving offered in conjunction with KLLM Transportation, a Jackson Based national transportation company, diesel repair, and an internship program offered in conjunction with Continental Tire who is building a tier manufacturing plant in Clinton.
 
Hinds' 100th anniversary Celebration will be capped with a Centennial Gals in the Clyde Muse Center on the Pearl campus in Rankin County. The center is named after Dr. Clyde Muse who is the sixth president of Hinds and has served as Hinds' president since 1978. Dr. Muse's educational journey took him to East Central Community College, Delta State, culminating at Mississippi State university. He was a successful science teacher, coach, principal and superintendent prior to being named president. Under his leadership, the college has grown and prospered into the institution he leads today.
 
We thank Ms. Cotton for her commitment to the students and for her presentation to our club. MS Chief Justice Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

The Honorable William L. "Bill "Waller, Jr., Chief Justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court, spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at its July 25, 2017 meeting. Justice Waller is an Eagle scout, a graduate of Mississippi State University and of the University of Mississippi School of Law. He practiced law in Jackson with the firm of Waller & Waller for 20 years before being elected to the MS. Supreme Court in 1996. He became Chief Justice in 2009. The subject of Justice Waller's presentation was "The State of the Judiciary Report" which was first given to the Mississippi Bar Convention at its annual meeting earlier in July. He said that the judiciary will be celebrating its 200th Anniversary this year as part of the State's bicentennial. He discussed some notable achievements of the court including the admission of the first African-American to the state bar in 1886 and the introduction and use of electronic records by the Judiciary. Justice Waller is shown in the accompanying photo during his presentation. The image on the screen in the photo is of  the 9 justices of the Mississippi Supreme Court. We thank Justice Waller for his presentation and for his service to the citizens of our state.
 
Dick Dickerson Honored as 2016-17 Rotarian of the Year

Dick Dickerson who recently stepped down as Administrative Secretary/Treasurer of the Rotary Club of North Jackson meeting was recognized as the 2016-2017 Rotarian of the Year by the Rotary Club of North Jackson at its July 25, 2017 meeting. Dick is relocating to Oxford, MS where he and his wife, Claire, are building their retirement home. He is shown in the accompanying photo at the podium following presentation of the award. We thank Dick for his 25 years of service to our club and extend our best wishes for his relocation to Oxford. Dick is a Past-President of the club (2007-2008) and is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow.
MS State Univ. AD Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

John Cohen, Mississippi State University Athletic Director spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at its July 18, 2017 meeting. Mr. Cohen discussed MSU's athletic programs focusing on the five guiding principles according to which the department operates; i.e., 
 
  1. Focus on the student athlete.
  2. Recognize and employ the full slate of compliance
  3. Utilize fiscal responsibility
  4. Serve our people
  5. Relentlessly promote Mississippi State
He amplified each of these points, emphasizing that compliance is not just with NCAA requirements but with life itself. With respect to promoting MSU, he said that the slogan is not "Go Dawgs" but "Hail State" as exemplified in the University's Fight Song. Mr. Cohen also spoke of the success that MSU has had on the athletic fields and in the recognition of that success. In addition to he baseball program under head coach Andy Cannizaro, he particularly discussed the success of the football program under head coach Dan Mullen; Women's basketball under head coach Vic Schaefer; as well as the student athletes past and current in the programs.
 
Prior to becoming Athletic Director , Mr. Cohen was an extremely successful head baseball coach at MSU (2009-2016), University of Kentucky (2004-2008), and Northwestern State U. in Louisiana (1998-2001). At MSU, he took baseball teams to the College World Series, where a team was national runner-up (2013) and several times to the NCAA Regionals and Super Regionals.
