Rotary Scholar urges alumni to stay connected

I was born and raised in a rural barrio (neighborhood) in Mindanao, Philippines. I moved to Guam when I was about 18 years old. I became a member of the Rotaract Club of the Marianas in Guam when I was completing my undergrad degree in biology, and served as secretary in 2011-12 and as youth services director in 2012-13.

I moved to Hawaii in August 2015, and with a Rotary Scholarship funded by a global grant, began taking classes in public health, focused on disease prevention and treatment. I will finish my program in May 2017.

I have always been interested in ending polio and finding ways to help our club make a difference. Rotary’s This Close campaign is inspiring and resonates with my dream of developing and promoting programs that address health care needs and decrease the occurrence of communicable and vaccine-preventable diseases in medically underserved communities like the barrio where I grew up. As a humble immigrant from a developing country, I want, in my own way, to Be a Gift to the World.

The global grant scholarship is helping me achieve that goal. I have tremendous support coming from Rotary District 2750, and I also have a supportive host club, the Rotary Club of Honolulu. I’m very proud and honored that the club asked me to serve as a judge for the Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation Committee, which grants $5,000 scholarships to graduating seniors at Hawaii high schools who wish to go to college. My role on the area selection committee will be to judge applicants from my area.

I would encourage other Rotary alumni to continue to find ways to stay involved with Rotary, even after you finish your program or studies. We all can make a difference.

  • The Holiday Party will be held Thursday, December 17 at Seymour Pooley's home located at 105 Oakhurst Trail, Ridgeland 39157.   • Billy Brumfield House. The Rotary Club of North Jackson is serving supper once a month at The Billy Brumfield House, a Stewpot Community Services ministry. Our club serves on the 1st  Tuesday of each month.  Interested members need to meet @ Baker Donelson located at the corner of Meadowbrook and the I-55 North Frontage Road @ 5:15 and then travel together to Billy Brumfield. Volunteers are particularly needed for Tuesday, December 1. Please let Mike Dawkins know if you can serve that evening. Also, if you are interested in sponsoring a month, the est. cost is $180 for the food. It is time to sign up for our Between the Lions outreach program, We read weekly October - May to pre-Kindergarteners at William Walton Elementary School on Bailey Ave. Please consider signing up to read this coming year.  It is a wonderful experience!     When the Canadian army liberated the Netherlands in 1945, they found the country on the brink of starvation. Seeing the suffering of so many, and especially moved by the faces of the children, four Canadian privates stationed near Apeldoorn that year decided to make that Christmas special for as many Dutch children as they could.

    Together, they made the rounds among their fellow soldiers, collecting chocolate bars and chewing gum, candy and comic books. In their spare moments, they built toy trucks out of wood and wire, sawed scrap lumber for building blocks; one, risking the military police, sold his cigarette ration on the black market, using the money to buy rag dolls. Each thought longingly of his own family at home; each channeled his energies instead toward the children whose Christmas they knew they could brighten.

    By 1 December, four sacks of gifts lay ready; the soldiers eagerly looked forward to the 25th. But two days later, they learned the date they were to depart for Canada: 6 December, long before Christmas. With mixed emotions, the soldiers decided that the best plan simply would be to take their sacks over to the local orphanage and leave them there to await Christmas.

    The night before they were to leave the Netherlands, the four set off for the orphanage, one of them in a makeshift white beard and red cap. On their way, they were surprised to hear church bells ringing and see houses lit brightly, with Christmas still some weeks away. As they approached the orphanage, boots crunching in the snow, they saw through the windows that the children, two dozen girls and boys, were gathered at their evening meal. Only a few months after the war's end, food was still scarce; the meal was small, and the children's faces pale and thin.

    "Santa Claus" raised the knocker on the door and knocked three times, hard. As if by magic, the chatter of young voices inside fell silent; a priest opened the door. His polite expression gave way to one of shock, as the children behind him erupted into cheers, rushing forward and swarming the private who had dressed for Christmas three weeks early - but exactly on time. For in the Netherlands, Sinterklaas comes on St. Nicholas Eve: 5 December.

    For an hour, joyful chaos reigned as packages were opened and exclaimed over, sweets were tasted, dolls caressed. The last wooden truck, the last bar of chocolate, went into the hands of a little boy who had been waiting patiently all the while. After thanking the men, he turned to the priest and said something to him in Dutch, his face alight with happiness. The priest smiled and nodded. "What did he say?" one of the soldiers asked.

    By sending joy out into the world, we do not sacrifice it for ourselves - we only multiply it. As we enter this season of giving, let us multiply the gifts we have been given by sharing them with others. Through acts of caring, kindness, and generosity, in our clubs and through our Foundation, we become and remain a gift to the world.

Dr. Srinivasan Vijayakumar, M. D. Speaks to Rotary Club of NOrth Jackson

Dr. Srinivasan Vijayakumar, M. D. (shown in the accompanying photo) spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at its November 24 meeting on the subject of prostate cancer. Dr. Vijay, as he is more commonly known, discussed the incidence of prostate cancer and its treatment. Dr. Vijay is Professor and Head of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. He also distributed copies of his book, "An Oncologist's View of Prostate Cancer: Understanding the Facts, Sorting through the Options." We thank Dr. Vijay for his time, his presentation  and the books.

Reimagine Prep Principal Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Christina McDonald, Principal in Residence of the Reimagine Prep. Charter School in South Jackson spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at it November 17, 2015 meeting. Ms. McDonald discussed the formation, goals and Mission of Reimagine Prep, which is located in the McDowell Road facility previously used by St. Therese Catholic School, which recently closed. 
 
As discussed by Ms. McDonald, the goal of Reimagine Prep is to have every student fully prepared for college when they graduate. Currently,  the school has a 5th grade class. They plan to add a new grade annually until all 12 levels of elementary and secondary schooling are represented. The school spends considerable effort to reading and mathematics and operates from 7:30 -4:30 daily. It also has regular contact with the parents of its students, which are termed scholars.

Rotary Club of North Jackson Members Serve Lunch to Homeless

North Jackson Rotarians Serve Lunch to Homeless

In place of their normal meeting, North Jackson Rotarians served lunch to the homeless at Gateway Rescue Mission and Stewpot Community Ministries on Tuesday, November 10. The accompanying photos art of the the volunteers at both locations. Shown at the Gateway Mission (from the left) are Rotarians Ford Mosby, Rob Whitley, Nick Miller, Witt Ruffin and Mike Dawkins.

​Both organizations feed the homeless on a daily basis. The Rotarians appreciated the opportunity to serve as well as enjoying the time. The day provided an opportunity to live to the Rotarian motto "Service Above Self."

Two New Rotarians Inducted into Rotary Club of North Jackson

Mike Duggar and J. Paul Stockwell Inducted into the Rotary Club of North Jackson

Charles M. "Mike" Duggar and J. Paul Stockwell were inducted into the Rotary Club of North Jackson at its October 20, 2015 meeting. Mike is CEO of the Methodist Children's Home and J. Paul is a Sr. Tax Manager with Watkins Ward Stafford CPAs. Mike was previously a member of the Harris County, GA Rotary Club. His Rotary classification is Children's Home. J. Paul's Rotary classification is CPA. Mike was proposed for membership by Cynthia Till and J. Paul by David Nicholas. They are shown in the attached photo with their proposers and their joint sponsor, Past President Charles Lindsay . We welcome both Mike and J. Paul to our club. Thank you Cythia and David for proposing them for membership.
