    There will be no noon meeting on Tuesday, May
    10. Instead we will have our annual Club As-
    sembly at St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral,
    305 East Capitol St., Jackson. Food will be pro-
    vided by the cathedral's renowned Holy Smokers!
  • Nissan Tour, May 31. Please remember

    Details are on the signup sheet. We will
    not have a noon meeting that day as the
    Country Club of Jackson will be closed in
    honor of memorial Day.

  • Billy Brumfield House. The Rotary Club of
    North     Jackson is serving supper once a month at
    The Billy Brumfield House, a Stewpot Community
    Services ministry. Our club serves on     the 1st  
    Tuesday of each month.      Interested members

Thought is about Group Study
Exchange (GSE).
  
A GSE team from Holland spent
four weeks in California, USA.   
During their time in California,
the Dutch GSE team raised
$2,913 for the Inca Educa char-
ity based in Cusco, Peru to build
a school library for underprivi-
leged young adults.  The team,
led by retired firefighter, Bob
Boersma, was composed of
people from diverse professions: 
working in public service, admin-
istrative law, public broadcasting
and financial services.  The team
participated in vocational and cult-
ural days and returned home, hav-
ing made new friends and business
contacts, ready to share new ideas
with their Dutch countrymen.  Has
your club sponsored a GSE?  It’s a
great way to create Service through
Acquaintance.  Contributions to our
Foundation are the oil that makes
the Rotary Wheel of service turn.

Opening doors in Cuba

plays some of the gifts delivered by the team of
Rotary members.

Along with 40 friends and supporters of the H2O-
penDoors project, I took part in an eight-day
exploratory expedition to Cuba on 8 April.

Members of six Rotary clubs in District 5150 
and their friends and family joined The Bay
Area Cuba Community Alliance, starting on
the far eastern side of the island for a visit
and site survey at a small village in Granma
province. Each person presented a suitcase of
donations to the Town Delegate in an emo-
tional ceremony.

Baseball equipment, animal husbandry tools,
chool supplies, and children’s clothing were
among the gifts for over 550 residents. The
town had been home to one of the best com-
munity baseball teams in Cuba, but they have
been unable to play for over two years for lack
of equipment. After a great ball game, the town
elders hosted us for a lunch feast.

H2OpenDoors will return in December to install
a SunSpring water purification plant to provide
safe drinking water for the entire community,
and an additional system in a similar community
near Havana.

Following the visit to the rural colonies, our group
hosted a cocktail gala at Havana’s iconic Hotel
Nacional for Cuban entrepreneurs to start a dia-
logue about Rotary and the recent visit by U.S.
President Barak Obama’s administration, and to
build new friendships. The 120 participants broke
out into four focus groups for lively discussions
about the arts, education, water and infrastruc-
ture, and businesses.

Another 40 people will be able to join H2Open
Doors between 8-17 December for a similar
schedule, including a day at the Havana Interna-

man owns KL&P Marketing, a large agency in
the Silicon Valley. He has been a member of
the Peninsula Sunrise Rotary Club in Redwood
City, California, since 2012. Jon started
H2openDoors as a Rotary project to provide
drinking water technology to the poorest villages
and schools who spend up to a third of their daily
income on bottled water.

Star Students and Teachers Recognized by North Jackson Rotarians

At its April 26, 2016, meeting the Rotary Club of
North Jackson recognized Star Students and their
Star Teachers from 4 North Jackson High Schools.
Each student talked about himself or herself, identi-
fied the school they attend and identified their Star
Teacher telling why they selected that teacher.
The students also discussed their plans for
further studies and their career plans. Star
Students are selected based on their ACT
scores and high school grade averages. The
students (their schools and teachers) honor-
ed at the April 26 meeting were Dalton Gib-
son (Jackson Academy, Cori Ciaccio), Marina
Joel (Marsha Hobbs) and Seth Lenoir (Kimberley
Van Uden) (both Jackson Prep), Joseph Neyland
(Murrah,Sarah Ballard),  and Isabelle Moseley
(Sandra Hindsman), Krish Manisundaram (Ruth
Holmes), Tracey, Rappa (iSallie Moseley) (all
three St. Andrew's).
 
The accompanying photos are of the speakers.
In order, they are of Dalton Gibson, Joseph
Neyland, Marina Joel, Scott Lenoir, Isabelle
Mosley, Krish Manisundaram, and Tracy Rappai.
Each Star Student received a certificate and a
$50 check. We congratulate the students and
their teachers and thank them for being part of
our meeting.

New Rotarians Present Vocational Talks
New Jackson Rotarians Jeff Broome and
Nick Miller presented vocational talks to
the Rotary Club of North Jackson at its
April 19 meeting. Mr. Broome, an engin-
eer, discussed the work of Sound and
Communications. Sound and Communica-
tions uses engineering principles to design
and install sound systems in area locations.
He discussed some highlight moments in-
cluding when Johnny Cash threw a micro-
phone at a Mississippi State University con-
cert. (he brought the microphone to the
meeting. He gave the example of some key
projects that the firm has done, including
the new Prerforming Arts Center at Jackson
Academy. Mr. Broome is shown at the meet-

Nick Miller discussed how he got into the
real estate business. He started by selling
repossessed properties for financial institu-
tions and evolved to his present occupation
of leading Viking Investments. He joined Vik-
ing in 2008 and purchased the founding owner,
Mark Field's interests in 2012. Viking's business
model is to annually purchase delinquent taxes
at tax sales and to sell the tax deeds on those
properties when properties mature to Viking if
the owners fail to redeem their taxes. If the
owners do redeem their taxes, Viking receives
interest of 1.5% per month on the amount of
taxes that it paid at the tax sale. Mr. Miller also
pointed out that the purchaser of a tax deed
from Viking must  successfully pursue a Con-
firmation Suit at the Chancery Court in  order
to get a clear title to the property. Mr. Miller
is shown in the accompanying photo during
his presentation.
 
We thank both Mr. Broome and Mr. Miller
for their very interesting presentations and
for becoming members of the Rotary Club of 
North Jackson.

Rotary Peace Fellow Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Bul Mabil, a Rotary Peace Fellow sponsored by
the Rotary Club of North Jackson, spoke to the
Club at its April 12, 2016, meeting. Mr. Mabil
studied Conflict Resolution at the University of
Bradford in Yorkshire, UK from fall 2014 through
December 2015. He was accompanied by his fam
ily which includes his wife and three children.
They returned to Jackson in January
2016. Mr. Mabil is employed by the Mississippi
Department of Transportation (MDOT). At MDOT,
he is focusing increasing the use of public trans-
portation in Mississippi.
 
In his presentation, Mr. Mabil discussed his hist-
ory as one of the Lost Boys of Sudan. He left
his home at the age of 5 and came to the US at
the age of 17 after spending time in Kenya
and Ethiopia. At the completion of his studies in
the UK, Mr. Mabil nd his family went to Nairobi,
Kenya where the children were able to meet their
grandmothers and the grandmothers were able to
meet their grandchildren. A brother and a sister
were killed in the fighting in South Sudan. Another
sister lives in Australia. Mabil and his family live in
Madison.
 
According to Mr. Mabil, the current fighting in South
Sudan is over oil. Prior to the creation of South Sudan,
Sudan sold its oil to a Chinese company. After the crea-
tion of South Sudan, there was a desire to sell the
oil to American companies. Thus the fighting.

Since coming to the United States as an orphan, Mr. Mabil
has earned Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Millsaps
and Belhaven, respectively, and a Masters from the Uni-
versity of Bradford.

Dickie Scruggs Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Former  lawyer Dickie Scruggs spoke to the Rotary
Club of North Jackson at its April 5, 2016 meeting.
The main topic of his presentation was Second
Chance Mississippi, a non profit organization he
founded to get more of Mississippi's youth a GED
or high school equivalency certificate. He cited
statistics that there are 500,000 high school drop-
outs in Mississippi, that 14,000 more drop out an-
nually, and that 77 high school students drop out 
each school day. His objective is to raise Mississippi
from 50th in the number of young people complet-
ing high school.
 
Mr. Scruggs also discussed his incarceration in a
federal prison in Kentucky and the time that it
took for him to be accepted as a "legitimate", i.e.,
non-pedophile prisoner. He is shown (center)
