July 11th Meeting
The first two meetings of our new Rotary year will provide us an experience that will again focus on the International Service component of Rotary International. For the 2nd consecutive year JSU is hosting 25 young African Leaders and providing academic and leadership training as a part of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders.
Our fellow Rotarian and club member Dr. Sharon Simmons, along with other JSU faculty have organized and are directing the program locally. Thanks to Sharon, we have the opportunity to participate again this year.
This program is the flagship program of the U.S. Government’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). YALI was created in 2010 and celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2020. Established in 2014, the Mandela Washington Fellowship has brought over 5000 young leaders from every country in Sub-Saharan Africa to the United States for academic and leadership training. The Fellows, between the ages of 25 and 35, are accomplished innovators and leaders in their communities and countries.
At each of our next two meetings we will host a group of half the Fellows and have the opportunity to engage and interact with them during the session. Our normal " program " time will be spent discussing with the individuals their jobs at each of the tables.
