Gracious God, as we unite in prayer, we give thanks
for the spiritual dimension of human existence in which
we find help and hope amid the secularrealities which
make insistent claims upon our time and effort. Having
retreated from those pressures for the time of renewed
fellowship with friends, we pray that you will grace our
gathering with your presence.
Accept now our thanks for all earthly provisions for our
needs, and for spiritual resources to pursue opportuni-
ties to serve others. Amen.

Dorothy Anderson has been proposed for membership by
Tom Parry and is sponsored by past president Patrick Smith.
Dorothy, whose Rotary name will be Dot, is a mental health
counselor at Anderson Jeffries and Associates, LLC, located
at the Jackson Medical Mall. Dot has earned her PHD and is
certified as a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC). Dot
and her husband Larry moved to Ridgeland 2 years ago after
living in Seattle for many years. They are the parents of
three (3) adult children. Dot’s Rotary classification will be
Mental Health Counselor.
Lawrence Anderson has been proposed for membership by
Tom Parry and is sponsored by past president Patrick Smith.
Lawrence, whose Rotary name will be Larry, is a business consul-
tant and owner of Anderson Jeffries and Associates, LLC, a mental
health counseling service located in the Jackson Medical Mall. Larry
is a native of Jackson and earned his BS degree in electrical engine-
ering from Ole Miss. He worked in quality control and sales with
Weyerhaeuser before retiring and moving back to the Jackson area
with his wife Dot. They are the parents of three (3) grown children.
Larry’s Rotary classification will be Paper Manufacturing.
Erin Elizabeth Halford has been proposed for membership
by Julian Carroll and is sponsored by past president Mike Daw-
kins. Erin practices law with the Glover Russell, P.A. firm locat-
ed in Jackson. She earned both her BA and JD degrees from
the University of Mississippi and has lived in Jackson over 20
years. Erin’s Rotary classification will be Attorney.
Matthew Monsour has been proposed by membership by Jeff
Adcock and is sponsored by past president Don Roberts.
Matthew, whose Rotary name will be Matt, is the operations
manager of Office Products Plus, which is located in Ridgeland.
Matt earned his BS and MBA degrees from Ole Miss and received
his Masters of Engineering degree from the University of Arkansas.
He and his wife Katie live in Jackson. Matt's Rotary classification
will be Office Products-Retail.
William Jeffrey Broome has been proposed for membership
by Tom Parry and is sponsored by past president Ann Somers.
William, whose Rotary name will be Jeff, is a system designer
for Sound & Communications, a Jackson business which provides
engineered audio, video and acoustical solutions for a variety of
clients. Jeff earned his BS in Business Administration and began
work at Sound & Communication 26 years ago. He and his wife
Necie have 2 children and live in Madison. Jeff’s Rotary
classification will be Audio/Video Systems.

Billy Brumfield House. The Rotary Club of North Jackson is serving supper once a month at The Billy Brumfield House, a Stewpot Community Services ministry. Our club serves on the 1st Tuesday of each month. Interested members need to meet @ Baker Donelson located at the corner of

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is
about a Rotary World Peace Fellow at work
on the frontlines.
Izabela Pereira, a 2007 graduate of the Rotary
Center for International Studies at Universidad
del Salvador in Argentina, helped monitor Nica-
ragua’s recent election as part of an Organiza-
tion of American States (OAS) mission to the
country. Izabela says her experience as a Rotary
World Peace Fellow and an OAS observer gave
her a firsthand understanding of how democracy
is being promoted and strengthened in Nicaragua.
She has also conducted fieldwork in Senegal and
Côte d’Ivoire for the United Nations Development
Fund for Women.
Izabela is one of hundreds of Rotary World Peace
Fellows who have received the training and field
experience necessary to work for lasting peace
and stability throughout the world. Our own Peace
Fellow, Bul Mabil, just returned to Jackson last week-
end following his studies as a Peace Fellow in the
north of England.

Surefire ways to wel-
come new members

This year, our club has been working to en-
hance how we welcome and orient new mem-
bers.
Through this effort, we learned of a resource
available on shop.rotary.org — aNew Member
Welcome Kit containing just a few items, all of
which are updated to reflect Rotary’s visual
identity. This kit is intended to be supple-
mented with club-specific materials that high-
light our membership and our impact in the
community.
We are now using these kits. In addition,
we give new members a printed photo r
oster of current members and a club bro-
chure that we designed using Rotary’s
|Brand Center. The roster allows our new
members to gain a better sense of who is
in our club as they work to strengthen
these personal relationships. The club bro-
chure is something our new members are
encouraged to pass on to prospective
members in their personal or profes-
sional network.
We have also begun
printing a sheet of mailing labels display-
ing our club logo (also developed in the
Brand Center) and our meeting location
and time. After reading each issue of The Rotarian, we invite our new (and ex-
isting) members to affix these labels over
their mailing address on their monthly mag-
azine, and drop it off at a public space (such
as the doctor’s office or gym).
These small and simple steps are intended
to help engage our members in promoting
our club and Rotary while also emphasizing
membership development is the responsibility
of every member in our club.
We’ve grown our membership by more
than 10 percent
Through the first six months of this Rotary year,
we’ve grown our membership by more than 10
percent, with several more individuals already
identified and interested in joining.
Our next step will be strengthening our new
member orientation program. If you have any
tips or ideas to share, please post them on the Membership Best Practices Discussion Group.

Mr. Pat Ware, a program manager with Stop Hunger Now, spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at its January 26th meeting. Mr. Ware discussed the need for food in the world, particularly in the developing countries and how their program operates. He was accompanied by Tom Johnson, President of the Rotary Club of Jackson, who will join with the Rotary Club of North Jackson to package foods for Stop Hundger now on February 20.
Mr. Ware is shown in the accompanying photo during his presentation. We thank him for his presentation and his commitment to stopping hunger and we look forward to our work day with Stop Hunger Now.
The Rotary Club of North Jackson will hold their annual Pancake Breakfast on Saturday January 30th from 8:00a.m. - 10p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church in Fondren. The cost for the “come and go” breakfast is $9.00. Tickets can be purchased from club members or at the door. The club will also be holding its annual blood drive on site. The blood mobile from Mississippi Blood Services will b site. Proceeds from the pancake breakfast will go to local charities. Dan Davis, president of Southern Research Group,
a marketing research and political consulting firm in
Jackson, spoke to The Rotary Club of North Jackson
during its January 19th meeting. Davis told mem-
bers about his many years of performing research
for local, regional, national and international po-
litical campaigns. Much of their business now is
doing marketing research for healthcare organiza-
tions. The Southern Research Group also does re-
search for the gaming industry. Shown (from left)

Congratulations to all five of these members for their achievements.
Club member and entrepreneur, Al Underwood, spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at its January 12, 2016 meeting. The subjects of his talk were the creation and success of his firms, Shady Al's Sunglasses and Franklin Eyewear. He attributed his success to his tenacity and hard work in finding market niches and filling them. The sunglasses are sold primarily by convenience stores in the Southeast. Franklin eyewear items are sold in pharmacies nationwide. Al discussed the sourcing of his products, and the relationships that he has developed with his suppliers and his customers, both of whom he calls "first generation" Americans. Al is shown in the accompanying photo with Club Member Billy Walton who gave him his first job in his pharmacy. Since working for Billy, Al has not had another boss other than his
customers and he himself.
