Building community and developing leaders at a unique changeover event

Changeover ceremonies, in which Rotary leaders transition to their new positions, are often formal events. I knew I wanted our district’s ceremony to be different. I wanted an event that would positively reflect the ideals of Rotary, that would be family-oriented and cost-conscious, and that would not take place in a hotel ballroom. I considered combining the district changeover with a service project, but I decided to create something even more unique: I planned the changeover to coincide with our annual Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA).
Our RYLA takes place each June at Camp Hinds, a Boy Scout camp on a lake in southern Maine, which has a full Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience (COPE) course. The course activities — including group initiative games, trust events, and low-ropes and high-ropes courses — are designed to teach participants leadership and problem-solving skills.
I also thought combining the changeover with RYLA would encourage more Rotary members to visit this amazing youth leadership program we run. Before long, a Changeover at Camp, complete with a potluck supper, was in the works. Rotary members were welcomed to the changeover with live music, and then many of them tried the challenging ropes course. Not all of them finished, but all who participated came back more aware of — and definitely impressed by — the RYLA program and what the 15-year-olds who take part experience each year.
All in all, it was a changeover that celebrated leaders of all types and promoted the goals of all Rotarians. I hope other Rotary districts are inspired to create a cohesive community event in the same way!

Dr. Jim Almas and Trace Swartzfager, both new members of the Rotary Club of North Jackson, spoke to the club at its July 14, 2015 meeting. Jim, a Montana native and a graduate of Stanford University and Columbia University Medical School, described his route to becoming a pathologist and his getting to Jackson as well as what a pathologist does. Trace, a native of Laurel, Mississippi and a graduate of the University of Mississippi and of Mississippi College, discussed his upbringing, his education, his career and his family. We are please to have both of them as members of our club and we thank them for sharing their stories with us.
2015-2016 Vice President Waytt Emmerich Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson
At the July 7, 2015 meeting of the Rotary Club of North Jackson, newly installed Vice President and President Elect Wyatt Emmerich showed a slide show of his trip to the 2015 Rotary International Convention in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He discussed the cities that he visited, the sites that he saw and the events that he attended. His bottom line, "our club members need to attend the next convention in Atlanta" to appreciate the scope and activities of Rotary International. Wyatt is shown at the meeting in the accompanying photo. Per Wyatt "we will be happy and proud to be Rotarians." Thank you Wyatt for attending the convention on our behalf and for your slide show.
Tom Parry Installed as 2015-2016 President of the Rotary Club of North Jackson
Tom Parry was installed as the
2015-2016 president of the Rotary Club of North Jackson as 2014-
2015 President Sean Culhane completed his term. President Tom is shown presenting Immediate Past President Sean Culhane a plaque recognizing his service to the club. In his inaugural address, President Tom, stated that he wanted the Rotary Club of North Jackson to join with the Rotary Club of Jackson and the Rotary Club of Madison-Ridgeland in supporting "Stop Hunger Now." Stop Hunger Now is headquartered in Raleigh, NC. Per its website, Stop Hunger Nowis driven by the vision of a world without hunger. Our mission is to end hunger in our lifetime by providing food and life changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable and creating a global commitment to mobilize the necessary resources."
The members of our club want to thank Past President Sean for his leadership and service and to congratulate President Tom on his new office. We look forward to his leadership in the coming year.

The Rotary Club of North Jackson recognized Joe Harris as Rotarian of the Year at its June 30, 2015 Meeting. 2015-2016 President Tom Parry and 2014-2015 President Sean Culhane are shown presenting Joe with his Rotarian of the Year Plaque at the meeting. In addition to his plaque, the club made a gift to the Rotary Foundation in Joe's honor making him a Major donor to the Rotary Foundation. Joe was specifically cited for his 1983 idea to have each member of the Rotary Club of North Jackson contribute $100 annually to the Rotary Foundation as part of their dues. President Tom also commented that with the donation in Joe's honor, the Rotary Club of North Jackson has now contributed over $500,000 to the Rotary Foundation.
In accepting the award, Joe commented as follows: "Thank you for such an unexpected and magnanimous recognition. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate it.
You mentioned our reaching past the 1/2 million mark in Rotary Foundation giving. If this is the cause of my awards,please let me remind everyone of a very important fact: I did not give the $501,186.24 all by my lonesome. Every Rotarian who has been or was a member of this club since 1983 is responsible for our achievement. My fellow Rotarians, your 27.5 cents a day or $25.00 per quarter or $100.00 per year, given each and every day,quarter and year is the sole and only reason we have achieved this plateau. We all, whether 44 years or 44 months or 44 weeks a member has contributed his or her requested portion of the total. I was and am just the bookkeeper, the recorder, the corresponder, the link to the Rotary Foundation,
which assignment, I was more than happy and proud to take on. But your contributions were what caused the wheels to roll and the deposits to grow. All credit goes to you, my fellow members of the North Jackson Rotary Club. And on behalf of the Rotary Foundation and all the people who have benefited from your largesse, I thank you with all my heart. I am so proud of this club and it's members and hope that long after I am no longer able to function efficiently that someone will step up and assume the responsibility."

Billy Brumfield House. The Rotary Club of North Jackson is serving supper once a month at The Billy Brumfield House, a Stewpot Community Services ministry. Our club serves on the 1st Tuesday of each month. Interested members need to meet @ St. James @ 5:15 and then travel together to Billy Brumfield. Between the Lions. Planning has begun for our Between the Lions reading sessions the fall and winter of 2015. We read almost weekly at WilliamWaltonElementary School on Bailey Ave. Please consider signing up to read next year. It is a wonderful experience!
