Club Assembly May 16th
There will be no noon meeting on Tuesday, May 16th.  Instead we will have our annual Club Assembly at St. Andrew's Cathedral (305 E. Capitol St., Jackson).  Food will be provided by the Cathedral's renowned Holy Smokers! The cost will be $25.00 per person, which will be charged to your next club bill.

 

Prayer. Today we pray that we receive Your  special blessing because we are committed to be a real service organization to help humankind. May  each of us in our daily routine come to know the joy of caring and sharing with others not as fortunate as we are. May our motto that includes  serving, caring and sharing be for us  life in service. Amen.

Proposed New Member Announcement. Philip Robert Potesky, whose Rotary name will be Bob, has been proposed for membership in the Rotary Club of North Jackson by Ann Somers and is sponsored by past president Edley Jones.  Bob is a partner and creative director at the Ramey Agency, an advertising and marketing firm in the Fondren area of Jackson.  He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Sarah Lawrence College.  Bob lives in Ridgeland and is the father of two adult children.  His Rotary classification will be Advertising Agency.

As you read these lines, final preparations are well underway for our 108th Rotary International Convention, 10-14 June in Atlanta. We're looking forward to one of the biggest and best Rotary conventions yet, as we celebrate not only a wonderful year of Rotary Serving Humanity, but a full century of Doing Good in the World through The Rotary Foundation.

If you haven't already made plans to attend, it's not too late to register at riconvention.org. There is simply no better way to round off another great year in Rotary than by coming together with 40,000 or so of your fellow Rotarians to share ideas, find inspiration, and have a great time together.

We're excited to have Bill Gates, a friend and partner in our work to eradicate polio, speaking at our convention this year. And it's worth arriving early to attend a special Presidential Peace Conference, scheduled for 9-10 June and featuring Bernice A. King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King.

I'm proud to host a convention that is practically in my own backyard: Atlanta is a vibrant, modern state capital just a two-hour drive from my home city of Chattanooga, Tenn., and it's a great place to experience the famous hospitality of the American South. Our Host Organization Committee has a great week planned, starting with the "Blue Jeans and Bluegrass" kickoff event on Saturday night.

Come on over to Centennial Olympic Park, right across from the House of Friendship, and get in a dancing mood with Grammy Award winner Ricky Skaggs and his Kentucky Thunder band. Meet up with friends old and new at the Centennial Celebration Block Party or on the Peace Tour of Atlanta. Roll up your sleeves for the Habitat Home Build, or tie up your laces to take part in the 3K Walk/Run to End Polio Now. And before you say goodbye, come back to the House of Friendship for one more party: our Foundation's 100th birthday party, with (of course!) cake and ice cream.

It's going to be an incredible experience, and Judy and I are looking forward to celebrating with you – or, as we say in the South, with y'all! See you in Atlanta!

  • Billy Brumfield House. The Rotary Club of North Jackson
    is serving supper once a month at The Billy Brumfield House,
    a Stewpot Community Services ministry. Our club serves on
    the 1st  Tuesday of each month. Interested members need to
    meet @ Baker Donelson located at the corner of Eastover
    Drive and the I-55 North Frontage Road @ 5:15 PM and
    then travel together to Billy Brumfield. Also, if you are in-
    terested in sponsoring a month, the est. cost is $180 for

    tween the Lions . During the school year, we read weekly
    to pre-Kindergarteners at William Walton Elementary School
    on Bailey Ave. It is a wonderful experience! The children
    are truly information sponges and very willing learners.

The girls of Malawi

The Rotary club’s project trained teachers for an after school program designed to empower girls, like those above, to stay in school.

Last April, I led a Vocational Training Team (VTT) to Malawi. The global grant project of the Rotary clubs of Limbe (Malawi) and Kansas City-Plaza (Missouri, USA) installed solar lighting in schools and trained primary school teachers in an after-school program designed to empower children, especially girls, to stay in school.

As in many countries, girls in Malawi face several challenge along their path to an education, including early marriage, teen pregnancy and HIV/AIDS. Malawi is called “The Warm Heart of Africa,” and with an average annual income of about $255 per capita, tenacity is more than an admirable trait. It’s a survival skill. Here are some of the traits, conditions and needs affecting the girls of Malawi in their quest for an education.

Multitasking: Village girls learn how to multitask from their mothers, walking barefoot several times a day from the village water pump with 70-pound buckets of potable water on their heads, babies on their backs, and another child or two by the hand. I saw village girls supervising younger siblings while pounding maize, herding goats, and trying to get homework done. These girls exhibited a tenacity that humbled me.

Tradition: According to a United Nations Development Program background paper on Malawi, 47 percent of girls finish standard 8 – the equivalent of the 8th grade. Family influences, the tradition of early marriage and teen pregnancy can easily discourage a girl’s plans for the future. A girl who intends to go to secondary school and then to college or university must have strong, quiet determination, as well as encouragement.

Role Models: I met dozens of girls who told me they aspired to become businesswomen, doctors, nurses or accountants. Most had never had an opportunity to meet women working in those professions. The village girls who succeed in getting an education are the future role models for other village girls.

My VTT experience has given me a global perspective on the value of girls’ education. With tenacity and encouragement, it’s my hope that the girls of Malawi will reach their aspirations.

Millsaps' Visiting Professor Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Professor Jason Carl Rosenberg spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at the club's May 2, 2017 meeting. Professor Rosenberg received his Ph. D. from the University of California San Diego. Having worked in Switzerland and Singapore for several years, Dr. Rosenberg is active in several contemporary music scenes and seeks to link these communities. In his talk, Dr. Rosenberg discussed his approach to Experimental Existential music and played some of his compositions.  Dr. Rosenberg is currently a Visiting Professor of music at Millsaps College. Ex. Dir. of CASA MS Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Mary Largent Purvis, Executive Director of CASA MS spoke to the Rotary Club of Jackson at its April 18, 2017 Meeting. CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates. Their role is to advocate for children in the Child Welfare System of Mississippi. CASA was formed in 1977 in Seattle CASA MS is a non-profit organization that advocates for the best interests of abused and neglected through the development and support of court-sanctioned, community- based CASA programs which provide trained and supervised volunteers. There are currently six CASA affiliates in MS in Adams, Clay, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson and Warren Counties. The Hinds County affiliate is in the process of reorganizing and is not currently active. 
 
According to Ms. Purvis, there are more than 660,000 children in foster care  the US. Sixty percent (60%) of those children (almost 400,000) have no access to a CASA volunteer. According to CASA, a child with a CASA volunteer is more likely to find a safe, permanent home:
 
  • More Likely to be adopted
  • Half as likely to re-enter foster care
  • Substantially less likely to spend time in long-term foster care.
  • More likely to have a plan for premanency, especially children of color
Children with CASA volunteers get more help while in the system ...
 
  • more services are ordered for the children 
  • and they are more likely to to have a consistent, responsible adult presence.
  • Volunteers spend significantly more time with the child than a paid guardian ad litem.
Mrs. Purvis is seeking CASA volunteers, who do not need to be attorneys, but can be. Financial donations would be appreciated.

Rotarian Erik Hearon shares Member Moment with Rotary Club of North Jackson

North Jackson Rotarian Erik Hearon shared his "Member Moment" at the April 18 meeting of the Rotary Club of North Jackson. Erik recanted that his father has been in the Army Air Corps during WWII and met Erik's mother in Brussels, Belgium at the end of the war.   She came to the US to marry his father and arrived in New Orleans in summer in a wool suit, being totally unaware of the summer climate in south Louisiana. Erik was born and raised in Jackson and attended Jackson Public Schools: Boyd Elementary, Powers Elementary, Bailey Jr. High and Murrah High schools. He is a graduate of Millsaps College and is a CPA. In addition Erik is a retired Major General in the Mississippi National Guard. He piloted cargo planes throughout his career in addition to various progressively responsible command assignments. He is the father of two grown daughters and a 17 year old son, Benjamin, who is a  freshman at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Erik and his wife Marla live in Ridgeland. Governor Phil Bryant appointed Erik to the Mississippi Humanities Council, where he continues to serve.
 
Erik has been a North Jackson Rotarian since 1979 and has 39 years of perfect meeting attendance. He is a two times Paul Harris Fellow. Erik is shown during his presentation in the accompanying photo.
