This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about being a Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member.
 
What can you get for US$100 dollars these days? A pair of shoes, a nice dinner for two
or a stove for a needy family in rural Guatemala, A contribution of $100 to the Annual
Programs Fund will make you a Sustaining Member of The Rotary Foundation but it
also provides life-changing opportunities for those in need.
 
When you choose to support our Rotary Foundation you are making a difference in two
ways: you are changing lives and you are literally saving lives. What an amazing thing to
be able to say!.

 

 
  • Billy Brumfield House. The Rotary Club of North Jackson
    is serving supper once a month at The Billy Brumfield House,
    a Stewpot Community Services ministry. Our club serves on
    the 1st  Tuesday of each month. Interested members need to
    meet @ Baker Donelson located at the corner of Eastover
    Drive and the I-55 North Frontage Road @ 5:15 PM and
    then travel together to Billy Brumfield. Also, if you are in-
    terested in sponsoring a month, the est. cost is $180 for

  • Between the Lions. Please remember to sign up for Be-
    tween the Lions . We read weekly to pre-Kindergarteners
    at William Walton Elementary School on Bailey Ave. It is
    a wonderful experience! The children are truly information
    sponges and very willing learners. Contact Jenny Price

    reading when the children return to school on January 9.

The future of women in Rotary

International Women’s Day, 8 March, celebrates women and their social, economic, political, and cultural achievements around the world. This year’s campaign asks individuals to #BeBoldForChange in working for a more gender inclusive world.

RI President-elect Ian H.S. Riseley has also called upon Rotary clubs to seek more diversity in their membership, including improving the gender balance. In his address to Rotary’s annual leadership training event in January, Riseley noted that 103 of the incoming 539 district governors are women. These are “leaders who will help Rotary connect with, and represent, and better service, all the members of all our communities,” says Riseley.

Federal Reserve Representative Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Gail Psilos,, Director, Regional Economic Information, New Orleans Branch, Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta (the "Fed") spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at its March 7, 2017 meeting. Ms. Silos discuss the role of the Federal Reserve Bank, its goals and its mission. The Federal Reserve Bank is the Central Bank of the United States and it works to manage inflation and assure maximum employment. It performs this mission via monetary policy. Currently inflation is slightly below the target rate of 2% at approx. 1.8%. The Fed, collects and distributes massive amounts of data on the US economy, generally making these data available to interested people. There are 12 regional Federal Reserve Banks in the US. The Fed does business with member banks and annually returns its income to the U.S. Treasury. Last year it returned $92 billion to the Treasury. Ms. Psilos is shown in the accompanying photo with Past President Tom Parry following her presentation. We thank her for her very interesting and informative talk and for her seervice to our country.
 
North Jackson Rotarians participate in Food Packing Party

North Jackson Rotarians joined with Rotary Club of Jackson members and Rotaract Club members from Mississippi College to pack food for Stop Hunger Now at the Mississippi Ag. Museum on Saturday, February 25, 2017. The group packed 30,000 meals for distribution to undernourished people. Each meal consists of vitamins, dried vegetable flakes, soy flour, and rice. Stop Hunger Now is part of Rise Against Hunger which is an international hunger relief organization that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable, mobilizing the necessary resources to end hunger by 2030. According to their website, 792.5 million people across the world don’t receive enough nutrition to lead an active, healthy life and 325,000 volunteers around the globe put their hands on hunger in 2016. The result of their work is that 216 million

fewer people live with hunger than in 1990-92.The accompanying photo is from the project. Thanks to the Rotarians who participated in the project. If you missed it, you missed a wonderful morning and an opportunity to help those who are so much less fortunate that we are.


 
Rotarian Dennis Hardy Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Club Member, Dennis Hardy, A "Distinguished Toastmaster", spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at its February 28, 2017 meeting. The subject of his talk was "Life, the final curtain call." He discussed how will you be remembered at the end of your life. Will you have spend sufficient time with your family and friends or will you have spent too much time pursuing a career. We thank him for his insight. The subject is one that we all need to consider and act upon. Dennis (right) is shown with Rotarians Uriel Pineda (left) and Suman Das (center) following his talk. Dr. Das introduced Mr. Hardy and his presentation.
