This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought
is an inspiring quote from Paul Harris that
can be assimilated to the challenge to eradi-
cate Polio worldwide: 

 “I like to think that the pioneering days of
Rotary have just begun. What’s 40 years in
the life of a great Movement? There are just
as many new things to be done as ever there
were. Rotary must simply continue to pioneer
or be left in the rear of progress.”  Over 60
years later, Paul Harris’ words are just as mean-
ingful.  There are still so many new things to
achieve and promises to keep.  If every district
allocates 10% of its available District Designated
Funds (DDF) this year to the PolioPlus Partners
Program, we can reach the $5 million goal need-
ed to fund National Immunization Days in India,
Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria and fulfill our
commitment.  Remember what Paul Harris said
we must all strive to be PIONEERS on the long
road to PEACE.

 
  • New Member Announcement. Matthew Turnage is transferring his Rotary membership from the Rotary Club of Madison-Gluckstadt to the Rotary Club of North Jackson. Charles Lindsay will be his past president sponsor.  Matthew is a CPA at Matthews, Cutrer and Lindsay, P.A. where he is a shareholder.  He graduated with both a BS and Masters from the University of Southern Mississippi and is currently treasurer of the Jackson Touchdown Club.  Matthew and his wife Taylor live in the Fondren area of Jackson with their two children, Cecilia and William. This is the first publishing of Matthew’s membership transfer announcement.
  • Billy Brumfield House. The Rotary Club of North Jackson is serving supper once a month at The Billy Brumfield House, a Stewpot Community Services ministry. Our club serves on the 1st  Tuesday of each month. Interested members need to meet @ Baker Donelson located at the corner of Eastover Drive and the I-55 North Frontage Road @ 5:15 PM and then travel together to Billy Brumfield.   • Between the Lions. Please remember to sign up for Between the Lions for this coming fall. We read weekly to pre-Kindergarteners at William Walton Elementary School on Bailey Ave. It is a wonderful experience! The children are truly information sponges and very willing learners. I’ll never forget the introduction I used as an exchange student.

This year, I have had the outstanding opportunity of not only meeting other youth exchange students from around the world, but of being recognized by my Rotary community as an outstanding alumnus. My youth exchange took place in 2009-10 almost six years ago, and yet my Rotary experience feels like it’s just beginning.

Polar Plunge

During my exchange to Waukegan, Illinois, I searched for opportunities to be a part of the community and help out. For this I took up a challenge called the Polar Bear Plunge, which involved jumping into a frozen Lake Michigan in the heart of winter! I collected the highest amount any individual had ever collected for the event to support Special Olympics. In recognition of my community service, the town of Waukegan gave me their ambassador pin, and my host school district awarded me with a Superintendent’s Leadership Award. I was most honored to be named a Paul Harris Fellow by my host club.

But it’s not the recognition that drives me. You could say I’ve been serving my community since I was young. At the age of 11, I had an urge to invent things that would help society. I created a brick made out of paper waste and chewing gum that is one of eight patents I own.

Toilets

The toilets are stronger, cheaper, and more durable than conventional ones.

Just a few years after my exchange year, I started my own company to provide low cost eco-friendly building materials and today I am chairman of the BDream Group of Industries. We take industrial waste and process it with a specially formulated base, then form it into bricks that are dried using solar power.

My inventions help recycle a large amount of industrial waste every day and provide low cost houses and toilets to rural India. We also provide subsidized toilets to local Rotary projects. Giving back to Rotary in this way is important to me.

I joined the Rotary Club of Bulsar in 2015 because I believe in what Rotary does. I was honored to be nominated by my district and selected as one of the zone winners of the Rotary Alumni Global Service Award. Being one of the youngest youth exchange students to be nominated for this award humbles me, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.

My father is an active Rotarian, so I grew up around Rotary. I live a dream every day; a dream I started at age 11, that was made a reality as a Rotary Youth Exchange student, and that I have lived ever since.

Aging in Place Presentation at Rotary Club Meeting

Shari Crook, Reverse Mortgage Specialist, with
New Castle Mortgage, and John Merrell, Owner,
Amada Senior Health Care, spoke to the Rotary
Club of North Jackson about "aging in place" at
the club's August 23, 2016 meeting. Both people
spoke about the need to plan for financial needs
during your retirement. Ms. Crook discussed the
value of reverse mortgages in using the equity
in a people's homes  to supplement retirement
income and Mr. Merrell discussed the value of
Long Term Care Insurance to assist elderly
people when they need nursing care or are plac-
ed in assisted living facilities. The speakers are

Mr. Merrell for their very interesting and inform-
ative presentation.

MS Tourism Assn. Executive Director speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Rochelle Hicks, Executive Director of the Mississippi
Tourism Association (MTA) spoke to the Rotary Club
of North Jackson at its August 16, 2016 meeting. The
subjects of Ms. Hicks presentations were the import-
ance of tourism to the State of Mississippi and how
the MTA works with Visit Mississippi to increase tour-
ism in the state. The goal of MTA is to serve as the
statewide voice for all segments within the hospitality
industry and to ensure the travel and tourism industry
receives adequate attention on all legislative matters.
Ms. Hicks stated that  "As the 4th largest private sector
employer in Mississippi, our thriving industry accounts
for over 85,000 direct jobs. In 2015, 22 million people
visited our state and spent $6.1 BILLION dollars. " As
she said, this is "BIG BUSINESS." She is shown in the

Ole Miss Athletic Director Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Ross Bjork, Ole Miss Athletic Director, spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at its August 9, 2016 meeting. Mr. Bjork discussed the role of the Athletic Department, its place in the university and its objectives for the Student Athletes participating in it sports. Per Mr. Bjork, Ole Miss athletes achieved an average grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 in the 2015-2016 academic year. The Department has annual budget of about $130 million, which it derives from donations. TV revenues, game admission, and revenues from the Southeastern Conference's participation in post season sports. In the 2015-2016 season, it opened a new facility, the Pavilion, which is the home to the Ole Miss Basketball teams. Mr. Bjork is shown in the accompanying photo at the podium during his presentation. We thank Mr. Bjork for coming to our meeting and for his presentation to our club.

Daniel Parry Honored as Paul Harris Fellow

Daniel Parry, son of Immediate past President Tom Parry and his wife Betty, was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow at the August 9 meeting of the Rotary Club of North Jackson. Paul Harris Fellows are those individuals who have donated or had donated in their name$1,000 to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. The Paul Harris Fellow program was started in 1957. More than 1 million people have been honored as Paul Harris Fellows. Mr. Parry (standing, center) is shown in the attached photo when his father (standing, right) pinned the Paul Harris Fellow Pin on his shirt. We congratulate Daniel on his reception of this honor.
