Rotary Foundation Thought. This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about making a Major Gift to the
Annual Programs Fund of The Rotary Foundation.

Tom and Fran Bayless of Ohio are passionate about Rotary and support the Foundation in many ways. Tom made his wife, Fran, a Paul Harris Fellow to celebrate the birth of their first child. Their children became Paul Harris Fellows on special birthdays. Following open heart surgery, Tom and Fran decided to became major donors to the Foundation in celebration of her recovery. Said Fran, Anything we can do, we should do. . . Where does your backyard end?”

Our investment in time, talent and financial resources are an investment in making the world a safer and healthier place for our children and grandchildren.

 

 
  • Billy Brumfield House. The Rotary Club of North Jackson is serving supper once a month at The Billy Brumfield House, a Stewpot Community Services ministry. Our club serves on the 1st  Tuesday of each month. Interested members need to meet @ Baker Donelson located at the corner of Eastover Drive and the I-55 North Frontage Road @ 5:15 PM and then travel together to Billy Brumfield. During the school year, we read weekly to pre-Kindergarteners at William Walton Elementary School on Bailey Ave. It is a wonderful experience! To The Gambia and back: Our Dutch adventure

The Dutch Rotarians took 11 cars to The Gambia

The Dutch Rotarians took 11 cars to The Gambia, which were auctioned off to support women’s education.

Our adventure started on 21 October 2017. Rally teams of six Dutch Rotary clubs, accompanied by five independent sup-porting teams, departed from Zwijndrecht in the Netherlands for a challenging 7,500 km (4,600 mile) journey to The Gambia, where we arrived on 11 November. The trip passed through Belgium, France, Spain, Morocco, Mauritania, and Senegal, through desert areas and sometimes accompanied by local guides for security reasons.

The 11 cars that took us to The Gambia were sponsored and auctioned at final destination. The result: $50,000 to be donated to a Dutch Rotary initiative called  “School Plan Gambia,” which enables young women to attend school up to and including university.

On departure, our cars were all fully loaded with relief supplies to be distributed to various hospitals and institutions visited during the trip. We transported an incubator for a hospital in Mauritania and various ultrasound machines and medical supplies for health centers in Senegal and The Gambia. All of those were donated by Dutch hospitals.

During the trip, we were warmly welcomed by local Rotary clubs such as Nouakchott in Mauritania and St. Louis in Senegal. The two Rotary clubs in The Gambia, Brusibi, and Fajara, welcomed the teams with a dinner and a lunch. In Senegal, the team members were invited for dinner by the Dutch Ambassador.

This challenging trip was not only an unforgettable experience for all participating team members but also, most importantly, an excellent opportunity to promote Rotary’s presence and good work in this part of the world.

The six Dutch Rotary clubs which joined us on this trip were: Texel, Harderwijk, Amsterdam-Nieuwendam, Dordrecht Johan de Witt Ter Merwe, Zwijndrecht-Waal en Devel and Zwijndrecht.

We’re already working on the next trip for 2019.

University of Southern Mississippi Athletic Director speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Mr. Jon Gilbert, Director of Athletics for the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at the club’s August 21, 2018, meeting. He is shown in the accompanying photo prior to his speech with club member and Past President Charles Lindsay who introduced him.
 

Mr. Gilbert emphasized that USM is nationally competitive in several of the sports in which it competes, specifically, football, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women's track & field in spite of an athletic budget that is less than 25% of the budget of the larger competitors. He also stressed that 216 of USM’s 350 student-athletes achieved a 3.0-grade point average (B) or higher in the 2017-2018 school year.

 

USM participates athletically in Conference USA. USM Baseball player, Nick Sandlin, was named as Conference USA’s Male Athlete of the year in addition to achieving a 3.91 GPA as a Construction Engineering Technology major.

 

Mr. Gilbert also discussed three issues facing the NCAA, including the number and type of scholarships universities can give to student-athletes in various sports, betting on collegiate athletic contests, and Grant-in-Aid Antitrust Litigation that could change the way that college athletes are compensated.

 

Prior to joining USM in 2017, Mr. Gilbert was Executive Sr. Associate Athletic Director at the University of Tennessee and prior to that Associate Athletic Director the University of Alabama. He is a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College in North Carolina and received an MS in Sports Administration from Eastern Kentucky University. We welcome Mr. Gilbert to MS and thank him for what he is doing for USM, particularly the student-athletes.

MSU Athletic Director Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

John Cohen, Mississippi State University Athletic Director, spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at the Club’s August 14, 2018, meeting. The purpose of the speech was to update the Club on the status of the MSU Athletic Department. In the first photo, Mr. Cohen (right) is shown with Bo Hemphill, Deputy A.D. for Development, prior to his presentation. Mr. Cohen was also accompanied by Rob Jenkins, Associate A.D. for Development.
 
Mr. Cohen discussed the new facilities the Athletic Department has for its sports, including, the new Dudy Noble Baseball complex, the new Templeton Athletic Academic Center,  new football Game Day facilities, and the various sports in which the university has teams. He also emphasized that in the just-completed academic year, the MSU student-athletes had a school record cumulative GPA of 3.08 while four teams finished in the top ten nationally of their respective sports, Women’s Basketball (2), Baseball (3), Men’s Tennis (5), and Men’s Outdoor Track & Field (10). Additionally, MSU was the only school in the nation to win a bowl game, reach the NCAA final four, and the College World Series. 2017-2018 was the first time since 1996 that multiple sports won an SEC championship; Women’s Basketball and Men’s Tennis.

MS Economic Council CEO Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Scott Waller, President & CEO, Mississippi Economic Council (MEC) spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at the club’s August 7, 2018 meeting. The MEC is the Chamber of Commerce for the State of Mississippi. The main purpose of his speech was to discuss impediments to the economic growth of the state, which he described as infrastructure needs and the education of its citizens to fill the jobs that continue to be available. He pointed out that by 2020, two years from now, 65% of all jobs will require postsecondary education and to quote: ”we must connect the dots and use postsecondary education and training to help create a qualified. and prepared workforce ready to fuel Mississippi’s economy.” Further, he said that Mississippi’s high school graduation rates are improving. They have gone from 71.1% in 2012 to 83% in 2016. Still not good enough, but improving nonetheless. Kindergarten reading readiness scores have likewise improved from 54% in 2015 to 65% in 2017 giving further hope for improved graduation rates in the future.

Multiple Paul Harris Fellows Honored by Rotary Club of North Jackson

The Rotary Club of North Jackson honored four multiple Paul Harris fellows at the club’s August 7, 2018 meeting. In the accompanying photos Foundation Director Suman Das is shown at the lectern honoring the four recipients: Joe Dove, Wyatt Emmerich, Ann Sommers, and Jon Turner. He is also shown presenting the four honorees with the customary glass of sherry that the club presents to all new and renewing Paul Harris Fellows. The four honorees are shown in the third photo with President Anna Powers and Dr. Das. Congratulations to these members and thanks to them for their continuing generosity!

 

 



 
Madison, MS Physician Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Dr. Micah Walker and Ms. Becky Russell spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson about Direct primary Care at the Club’s July 31, 2018, meeting. Direct primary care is a reversion to the older method by which you pay a physician a monthly fee to provide direct primary care to you and your family. The monthly fee is $69 for an individual under the age of 60 years, and $89 for individuals 60 years of age and over. A family costs $149 for two adults and one child.

Ms. Russell is a public relations consultant who subscribes to direct family care, is a graduate of Auburn University, and a native of Mexia, Texas. Dr. Walker is the founder and CEO of NewCare MD, LLC, a direct primary care provider in Madison, MS. He received his medical training at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS.

The program that Dr. Walker and Ms. Russell were describing is for primary care, emphasizing the availability of the physician and the personal care provided. They also discussed supplemental catastrophic care such as that provided by Liberty Health Share.
