Working together, we get more done

Members of Rotary, Rotaract, and Interact join community health workers in cleaning up an impoverished community near Naivasha, Kenya.

My Rotary club recently completed a very successful Rotary At Work Day in January where we cleaned up a poor community near Naivasha, Kenya.

This activity was truly a collaborative and inter-generational effort, bringing together members of the Interact Club of Trinity Mission School, the Rotaract Club of Naivasha, members of Rotary, friends, community health workers, and local government officials.

In total, more than 300 volunteers turned up for the activity, which went on for six hours. The slum has over 200,000 people. Due to the poverty level, the rate of infection from preventable disease is quite high in this neighborhood.

Our club, through our president, Juanitta Ndila, promised to donate dust bins to the community. In April, Rotaractors from the Naivasha club in partnership with the Rotary Club of Naivasha and health workers will host a free medical camp in their community. Collectively, we work together to have a bigger impact. Isn’t Rotary great!

Andy Chapman, EatJxn, and Alex Eaton, The Manship Wood Fired Kitchen, speak to Rotary Club of North Jackson.

Andy Chapman, founder of EatJxn and Alex Eaton, Executive Chef and Owner, of The Manship Wood Fired Kitchen spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at its March 24, 2015 meeting abouit their respective enterprises. EatJxn started in 2009 as a blog/website about the Jackson, MS food scene. The website has since expended throughout the SouthEast. Andy Chapman is a graduate of Mississippi State University. He is shown at the right and Mr. Eaton is shown below below. Mr. Eaton founded the Manship two years ago. He studied at MS State and at Johnson and Wales University Clulinary School in Charlote , NC and worked for the Besh Restaurant Group in New Orleans at its restaurants. The Manship specializes in Mediterranean inspired foods and features locally grown foods.Since its founding, The Manship has become a well reocgnized and respected restaurant in the Jackson Metro Area. We thank both Mr. Chapman and Mr. Eaton for their presentations and for their contributions to our area.

Jackson Prep Head of School Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Jason Walton, Ph.D. Head of School for Jackson Preparatory School spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at its March 17, 2015 meeting. He was introduced by Ms. Kennady Galloway, Prep's Student Body President, 4.0 student, and athlete (tennis and track and field) He is shown on the right with Ms. Galloway and Club Member Robert Aiken, a 2003 graduate of Prep.

Dr. Walton discussed his vision for the school and its accomplishments, both academic and extracurricular. He sid that many Prep graduates have gone away to attend college and professional school, but many have also returned home to make Missisipppi a better place. He pointed out that in adidtion to Robert Aiken, several North Jackson Rotarians have links to Prep. He also showed a group of 30 Prep Seniors that scored 30 or higher on the ACT exam as well as newspaper articles about 4 prep baseball players who have signed baseball grants-in-aid to attend SEC schools - two to Mississippi State, One to Ole Miss and one to Alabama,

We thank Dr. Walton for his presentation to our club and for the difference that he is making in Jackson.

Ms. Vickie Powell Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Ms. Vickie Powell, Sr. Vice President of the Mississippi Economic Council (MEC) spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at its March 10, 2015 meeting. Ms. Powell discussed the MEC's Mississippi Scholars Tech Master program. This program is aimed at having qualified high school graduates ready for meaningful workforce participation. In 2014, 285 students from seven pilot counties earned the distinction of being Mississippi Scholars Tech Master graduates. They represented school districts from all parts of the state. The Mississippi Scholars Tech Master program encourages and recognizes students that pursue and meet speific standards in a tech-prep course of study. Their achievements are recognized at graduation, just as the Mississippi Scholars program distinguishes those who pursue a college-bound studsy, with a particular empahsis on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Ms. Powell is shown at the right during her presentation. We thank her for speaking to our club and for the work that she and MEC are doing to improve the quality of our high school graduates.

Officer Maurice Young recognized as Pct. 4 Police Officer of the Quarter

Officer Maurice Young was recognized as the Pct. 4 Police Officer of the Quarter by the Rotary Club of North Jackson at its March 3, 2015 meeting. Officer Young is shown at the right with Club Past President Edley Jones in whose term the quarterly recognition program with Precinct 4 was initiated. Officer Young was recognized for pursuing and apprehending two carjackers in November 2014. In addition to the recognition, Offficer young receive a certificate and $200 gift card from McDade's Markets.

Our Club congratulates Officer Young on being recognized and expresses its appreciation for a job well done!
