Prayer. O God, how good it is for us to include
in our time together this acknowledgement that
you are our God, the Source of all for which we
are grateful. We confess our usual obsession
with the physically obvious in life, forgetting the
spiritual realities which become so easily obscur-
ed, but are always integrally present in the affairs
of every day.
 
Hear out thanks for food to nourish us, for fellow-
ship to enrich us, for work to engage us, all in ac-
cord with your will to empower us and your Spirit
to guide us. Amen.
 
Weekly Thought
This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about
a Rotarian going the distance for the Foundation.

Running, biking and swimming 482 miles in the
course of a year or even a month is hardly the
marvel of sports headlines.  But racking up that
distance in three days staggers the imagination. 
Jeff Glidden did just that through his Ultra Dis-
tance Triathlon Challenge, raising $100,000 and
counting, as of June 2007 for the Annual Pro-
grams Fund.  “It was difficult” said Glidden, “but
it was more rewarding than anything I have ever
done.  Many Rotarians that had never given be-
fore contributed and supported me, that was
definitely one of my goals” Corporate sponsors
helped fuel Glidden’s megatriathlon challenge by
each contributing at least $1000.  Local media
coverage also raised overall awareness of Rotary. 
All the proceeds from Glidden’s challenge went
to support The Rotary Foundation.

  • There will be no noon meeting on Tuesday,
    July 5 as the Country Club of Jackson will
    be closed in observance of Independence
    Day.
  • Congratulations to club members Barbara
    and Jonathan Jones on the birth of their
    first child, Catalina Sullivan Jones!  Their
    healthy, beautiful daughter was born on
    May 5th.  We wish the family well and
    many sleep-filled nights.   
  • Billy Brumfield House. The Rotary Club
    of North Jackson is serving supper once
    a month at The Billy Brumfield House,
    a Stewpot Community Services ministry.
    Our club serves on the 1st  Tuesday of
    each month. Interested members need
    to meet @ Baker Donelson located at
    the corner of Eastover Drive and the
    I-55 North Frontage Road @ 5:15 PM 
    and then travel together to Billy Brum-
    field. Also, if you are interested in spon-
    soring a month, the est. cost is $180

  • Between the Lions. Please remember to
    sign up for Between the Lions for this
    coming fall. We read weekly to pre-Kinder-
    garteners at William Walton Elementary
    School on Bailey Ave. It is a wonderful ex-
    perience! The children are truly informa-
    tion sponges and very willing learners.

Uppsala equips 9 to pursue peace

Rotary Club of Uppsala Carolina, Sweden

I was honored earlier this month to witness the begin-
ning of nine careers in peace building and conflict res-
olution as the most recent class at the Rotary Peace
Center at Uppsala University received their masters
degrees.

The memorable event concludes two years of training,
study, and practice for these dedicated and bright young professionals. The Rotary Peace Fellows joined 30 other
students at a graduation ceremony in the town’s medie-
val cathedral attended by friends, relatives, host families,
and members of the local Rotary clubs. Thanks to the
generous support of The Rotary Foundation, Rotary mem-
bers, and clubs, they are now equipped to solve problems
and make a positive impact on world peace.

Peace Fellow Kate Lonergan from the United States was
honored with the department’s Mats Hammarström Prize
for Outstanding Essay in Peace & Conflict Studies. Peace
Fellow and student representative Krystal Renschler of
Canada summarized what her fellow graduates were feel-
ing in her closing remarks:

“Uppsala has prepared us to meet the headwinds
of today’s winds of madness.”

Peter Wallensteen, a Rotary member, senior professor
at Uppsala, and also senior research professor of Peace
Studies at the University of Notre Dame, emphasized
how the skills the graduates have acquired will be instru-
mental in their pursuit of peace.

I feel proud to be part of an organization contributing
to global peace.

Rotary Club of North Jackson Recognizes Rotarian of the Year
The Rotary Club of North Jackson recognized J.
Clinton Smith, M. D. as "2015-2016 Rotarian of the
Year" at its June 21, 2016 meeting. Dr. Smith is very
active as a Rotarian and in the community. He has
lead North Jackson's Between the Lions and Book
Buddy programs. In the Between the Lions program,
Rotarians read weekly to pre-kindergarten students
at William Walton Elementary school in Jackson. In
the Book Buddy program,  Rotarians adopt Walton
School students and work with them to improve
their reading skills.Dr. Smith (right) is shown in
the accompanying photo with his plaque and with
the club's 2015-2016 President Tom Parry. Con-
gratulations to Clinton and thanks for a job well
done.
MSU Athletic Director Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Scott Strickland, Mississippi State University Athletic
Director spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at
its June 21, 2016 meeting. Mr. Strickland discussed
MSU athletics and its athletes and their achievements
on the field and academically, of which he seemed
very pleased. MSU fields intercollegiate teams in 16
sports and has been highly ranked nationally in sev-
eral of them, including making multiple post season
tournaments. Several athletes received achieved individ-
ual recognition for their achievements in their respective
sports. Mr. Strickland  (left) is shown in the accompany-
ing photo with North Jackson 2015-2016 Club President
Tom Parry. We thank Mr. Strickland for his presentation
and wish him good fortune going forward.
Hinds County Sheriff Speaks to Rotary Club of North Jackson

Victor Mason, Sheriff of Hinds County, MS spoke
to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at its June
14, 2016, meeting. The subject of his talk was
the actions that he has taken as sheriff since be-
ing sworn into office, including increasing patrols,
strengthening the operations of the County Farm,
restoring the vegetable stand as an operation on
Highway 18 in Raymond, increasing security at the
county courthouse in Jackson, and "beefing up"
the staff of the Sheriff's Department. We thank
him for his very interesting presentation. Sheriff
Mason is shown following his presentation in the
accompanying photo.
Pct. 4 Officer Meeks Recognized as Officer of the Quarter
