Prayer: Gracious God, as we Celebrate Veterans Day this week, we remember somberly those who served faithfully in military service. And, for men and women now serving, we offer prayer for their well-being and for their families.

Rotary Foundation Thought. This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about Matching Grants and how one project brought clean water and hope for a better future.
Matching Grants assist Rotary clubs and districts in carrying out humanitarian projects with clubs in other countries. A recent Foundation Matching Grant allowed Rotarians in India to provide 36 hand-pump wells to rural villages in Andhra Pradesh state where there is a severe shortage of water. Access to clean water will improve the quality of life for those living in these villages by helping to prevent disease and alleviate poverty. Every Rotarian, every project, and every contribution makes a difference every year.

It's time again to " Ring the Bell for the Salvation Army ". Location -McDade's Northside Drive.

District 6820 Dream Car Raffle. District 6820 needs your help with the Dream Car Raffle (www.dreamcarraffle.org). The grand prize winner will choose between a 2018 Porsche Boxster, Macan S, or $40,000 cash. There will also be 10 additional $500 cash prizes! Tickets are $25 each or 5 for $100. Winners will be announced at the Rotary Foundation Gala on January 26th, 2018 at the Country Club of Jackson. Proceeds—less prizes and expenses—will go to The Rotary Foundation (50%), Polio Plus (25%), and the District 6820 Foundation (25%). Each member is encouraged to sell a minimum of 10 tickets. Billy Brumfield House. The Rotary Club of North Jackson
is serving supper once a month at The Billy Brumfield House,
a Stewpot Community Services ministry. Our club serves on
the 1st Tuesday of each month. Interested members need to
meet @ Baker Donelson located at the corner of Eastover
Drive and the I-55 North Frontage Road @ 5:15 PM and

Between the Lions. Please remember to sign up for Between the Lions. During the school year, we read weekly to pre-Kindergarteners at William Walton Elementary School on Bailey Ave. It is a wonderful experience! The children are truly information sponges and very willing learners.

Peace partnership
Rotary Day at the UN culminates Geneva Peace Week. That event’s organizers include the Institute for Economics and Peace, a global think tank that uses data-driven research to analyze peace and quantify its economic value.

This summer, the institute, and Rotary announced a strategic partnership that will pair the two organizations’ individual strengths — empirical research and community connections — and focus them on resolving conflict and achieving peace.
On 8 November, as part of Geneva Peace Week, the institute will join the Geneva Centre for Security Policy in hosting a panel discussion, “Building the Evidence for Better Prevention.” Staged at the Maison de la Paix, it will systematically evaluate conflict prevention and peacebuilding methods in the context of a research framework.
Immediate past District Governor of District 6820, Amanda Fontaine, spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at the club's November 7, 2017, meeting The subject of PDG Fontaine's talk was Rotary Foundation, Your Charity of Choice.She discussed how the Rotary Foundation has provided neonatal care to children in underdeveloped countries, how it is providing funds to help educate children in U.S. Communities through programs such as Between the Lions, clean water for villages in Malawi, and how the Rotary Club of Memphis, TN is making life-saving surgeries for deserving children from underdeveloped countries by bringing the children and their families to Memphis, providing housing and with the hospitals providing surgery at no cost to the children. PDG Fontaine also discussed the levels of recognition for Rotary Foundation donors.
Following her talk, PDG Fontaine joined with Rotarian Suma Das in recognizing four Paul Harris Fellows, relatively new Rotarians Trost Friedler and Rich Sun and long-term club members Bob Ridgway and Swan Yerger who are multiple Paul Harris Fellows. Dr. Jason Parham, Associate Professor of Medicine and Associate Vice Chair for Quality, Department of Medicine, School of Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at its October 31, 2017, meeting. The subject of Dr. Parham's speech was Polio, how it is transmitted, its impact, efforts to eliminate it and their results. According to Dr. Parham, the number of polio cases worldwide has decreased from 350,000 annually in the mid-1980s to 12 this far in 2017. The only places that still have wild polio cases are Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. A total of $450 million has been pledged by Rotary International, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and others to finish the job.
Dr. Parham discussed the effect of polio on humans, the history of vaccines. He showed photos of the primary vaccine researchers Salk & Sabin and of a room full of iron lungs from the 1950s. He summarized the effort to eliminate the disease by saying that the progress shows the effectiveness of a well designed and implemented vaccination campaign. We thank Dr. Parham for his presentation and for his work in infectious diseases for the State of Mississippi.
Will Mosby, Account Vice President, of Capitol Wealth Management, an affiliate of UBS Financial Services spoke to the Rotary Club of North Jackson at the club's October 24, 2017, meeting. The subjects of Mr. Mosby's talk were the economy and the proposed Tax Reform program being considered by the U.S. Congress. Mr. Mosby showed slides that demonstrated that according to the S&P Index, stock values have nearly doubled since just before the financial crisis of 2008. They have more than doubled since the market low experienced in March 2009. Regarding tax reform, Mr. Mosby discussed alternatives being considered by legislative leaders. He discussed potential impacts of those reforms on various segments of the market.

District 6820 2017-2018, Governor, Bill Walker of Columbus, MS, spoke to the Rotary Club of NOrth Jackson at its October 17, 2017, meeting. Gov. Walker discussed Upcoming District Events and donation opportunities in addition to attracting new members. He pointed out that if we do not invite prospective members to attend our meetings and consider becoming Rotarians, they will not become Rotarians. New members are what sustain our club, so we need to be busily inviting people to attend our meetings. Governor Walker also participated in the recognition of three new Rotary Endowment Fund Benefactors, Wyatt Emmerich, Mark Green, and Don Roberts.
The week of October 16, 2017, North Jackson Rotarians donated and delivered Dictionaries to 3rd graders at four North Jackson Elementary Schools. The schools are Boyd, Casey, Dawson, & Spann Elementary Schools. The accompanying photo shows Boyd students with their new Dictionaries. We than Rotarian Greg Campbell for chairing this event and our Rotarians for participating.
North Jackson Rotarians Wyatt Emmerich, Mark Green, and Don Roberts were recognized as Rotary foundation Benefactors by District 6820 Governor Bill Walker at the October 17, 2017, meeting of the Rotary Club of North Jackson. Benefactors are Rotarians who have included the Endowment Fund as a beneficiary in their estate plans or have donated $1,000 or more to the fund outright.
